our mission

SheBUILDS is a two-day, global hackathon hosted by Girl Who Code at Berkeley for high school and college female-identifying students. As a beginner-friendly hackathon, we aim to equip our participants with 21st-century skills in order to help close the gender gap in technology and to change the image of what a programmer looks like and does.

our mission

Ever since childhood, we've been asked "what do you want to do when you grow up?" The tech industry is intimidating, confusing, and even unreachable to many youths growing up.

SheBUILDS provides a unique opportunity for high schoolers and college students alike to innovate, connect, and collaborate with UC Berkeley women in STEM. Our hackathon exposes students to a variety of technologies and fields like Artificial Intelligence and web development and to inspire participants to fearlessly pursue a career in those fields. SheBUILDS encourages participants to build on newly learned technologies in order to make their highest contribution to society. We want our participants to help themselves to help others.

Frequently asked questions

SheBUILDS is a beginner-friendly, two-day hackathon where participants will work collaboratively to propose and create innovative solutions to real-world issues with technology.

Of course! We welcome all skill levels and backgrounds. Our workshops and guided tracks will set you up with everything you need to get started on your idea.

Applications are due by Friday, April 30, 2021, at 11:59 PM PST (Pacific Standard Time).

Applications will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis.

You will be applying as an individual. During the hackathon, you will have the opportunity to form groups of up to four students.

High school and college non-binary/female-identifying students all around the world are welcomed to participate in the hackathon. You do not have to be a UC Berkeley student to participate. If you are an international student, we may not be able to ship you swag, but you will receive the other awards.

The hackathon will be held virtually on May 1st from 9AM-8PM and May 2nd from 10AM-3PM PST (Pacific Standard Time). The entire hackathon will be two days long.

Our main source of communication will be Slack. You'll receive an invitation to join our Slack upon your acceptance. All events and workshops will be held on Zoom. The Zoom links will be detailed on our Slack as well.

We offer TONS of beginner friendly workshops such as intro to hackathons, into to GIthub, intro to Artificial Intelligence, and much more!
